A passenger plane that crashed, killing dozens of people may have been hit by Russian anti-aircraft fire. That's what a US official tells Reuters based on early indications after the Christmas Day crash in Kazakhstan. Correspondent Stephanie Bennett is reporting live on this for us from London. Stephanie, what is the deal with this?
Hey, Jackie. Yeah, a lot of questions, not too many answers at this point, but speculation is mounting as to what caused this crash in the first place. Now, what we do know is that four sources in Azerbaijan with knowledge of this investigation told Reuters that the flight was downed by a Russian air defense system. Experts were quickly concerned after seeing all of this damage. In particular, though, the holes in the plane's tail section and part of the wing, which could indicate that it came under fire from Russia while fending off a Ukrainian drone attack in the region. Well, the UK-based aviation security firm, Osprey Flight institutions, they also thought the same, saying Ukrainian drone strikes have already hit that part of Russia this month alone. Now, the aircraft took off from Bakhou on yesterday morning and was due to fly to the Russian city of Grozny, but the airline initially said it was diverted because of heavy The plane was redirected across the Caspian Sea in Kazakhstan, where it landed short of the runway and then burst into flames.
