They're Pat Kenny show on news, talk with Marter private network during current restrictions. Don't ignore your health concerns. Our expert team is ready to help. Great stuff. Claire, thank you very much. Now news talks technology correspondent Jess Kelly is on the line to talk tech with a suggests. You're very welcome and a happy new year to you.

[00:00:50]

Before we go to the questions and they're already floating in from our listeners. Talk to me about 2021 because you might normally be heading for Vegas.

[00:00:59]

I'm normally in Vegas. My my Facebook memories for the last six years are all just gorgeous pictures of the Las Vegas Strip, whereas now I'm looking at my apartment and a slightly different. But it is going ahead. So that's the Consumer Electronics Show. It's the most important date in the tech calendar. This is where all the big companies come together in one place to show off whatever the next big thing in technology will be. It's taking place online. So it's definitely going to be different because you want to obviously have the usual exhibition halls.

[00:01:29]

My inbox is already flooded with people inviting me to their webinars about their new products. And we can expect the usual, you know, the weird and wonderful things. I think one of the first things I spoke to you about last year was a smart toilet. So God knows what we're going to get over the coming days. But it'll be interesting. It'll be interesting to see how it works, because this is the only one of this scale in the world.

[00:01:51]

So if a tech event can't make an online event work, then I don't think anybody can.

[00:01:57]

At the same time, there's nothing like hands on the products. Samsung first out of the gate yet we're very excited.

[00:02:05]

Samsung have confirmed the launch date of the next in the lineup. So people will obviously know the 20, the ten and so on. We're expecting the S21 to be launched on the 14th of January. So that's next week. And as usual, we're expecting three phones to be unveiled. So it'll be the S21, which is the standard one, the S21 plus, which is slightly bigger, and then the S21 ultra. And I've been reading some of the forums, you know, like there's so many rumor forums and rumor mills relating to product launches.

[00:02:38]

It seems like Battery and Kammerer will be the key upgrades to expect. But there are some who believe that the Espin you know, the stylus that comes with the note devices, they are saying and speculating that the spin could come with the S21, which would definitely shake things up. It would sort of pose the question as to who exactly they're targeting with this device. Hmm.

[00:03:01]

Now, any other big story is expected to dominate 2021. I mean, the big tech companies are in the wars in the states at the moment. Donald Trump particularly having to go with them.

[00:03:12]

Yeah, this is going to definitely dominate this year and indeed next year as well. So you may remember, listeners may remember towards the end of last year, we were talking pretty much every week about the different hearings that were going on in the U.S. investigating the power and influence of the big tech companies. And by those I mean Google, Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, those kind of huge big powerhouses to see if some of them should be broken up, to see if they have too much power.

[00:03:39]

And also, there's a lot of inter fighting going on between the different companies as well. Joe Biden and his incoming administration have said that they will be tough on tech. There's a lot of talk about a particular article, and it's Article 320, which is the splitting hairs thing of, you know, our Facebook and Twitter publishers. When information goes out online, should they be responsible for what's put out on their platforms? A lot of hate, a lot of misinformation and so on that Joe Biden has said that he will tackle that and address that issue.

[00:04:09]

So this is definitely one to watch. We don't know what will be the outcome, obviously. And but it's definitely one to watch for 20, 21 one.

[00:04:16]

Now, the questions coming in, I use JBL 220 earbuds, but the left one has stopped working. What can I do? That's from Gene.

[00:04:24]

Yeah, this is a strange one. Sometimes Bluetooth headphones, these are in earbuds that kind of look like Apple's airports, but obviously are made by JBL. And if you can unthink sync them from your phone. So disconnect them, make your phone, forget them and repair them and just see if they go back into sync. Sometimes that happens with my Samsung ones. They just go out of sync and one switches off. If that doesn't work, go back to where you got them because obviously that shouldn't be the case.

[00:04:48]

So you could have just got a faulty product.

[00:04:51]

I'm looking for advice on the best desktop. My grandchildren have wrecked my present one, which was in any event, a decade old.

[00:05:00]

Yet there are great offers to be had at the moment on desktop computers. HP is usually my go to HP or Dell when it comes to desktop computers. There's one and they have awful names. So I won't read right now, but we might tweet the link after the show. It's HP device. It's 419 euro at the moment, and that's just for the tower. So if the monitor that you currently have for your desktop still works, just get the cable and hopefully you'll be able to reuse that.

[00:05:27]

We can get so many different offers. But as I said, HP would be from affordability and performance. Point of view would be the brand to go to. Now, can you ask just about smartphone pithy light hawai, I have Samsung, J5, very little space need to change. What would you choose, Jess?

[00:05:45]

Yeah, the P 30 light is fantastic. This is it's a few years old now. We know that the way we p 4G was their flagship phone last year. So this is the previous year's flagship phone that the little sister of the 30 likes. It's still a brilliant phone. What I would say is make sure if you're buying a walkway product that it has Google services. So ideally, you're looking for the Whiteway 2019 version of that phone, because if you get the 20/20 version or even the 2021 version, it won't have access to the Google Play store.

[00:06:17]

And I know that they will say that it doesn't make a big difference and that there's workarounds. But even over Christmas, I was playing with the P forty pro because the camera on us is fantastic. But then you go and you try to use something like whether it's Google Maps or a certain application that you're looking for and you have to jump through hoops to get it. So I still just don't recommend the newer products, unfortunately.

[00:06:37]

Yeah, but you should be able to get a P 30 light Hawaii from 2019 at a very good price, I would imagine, at this stage. Yes. You know, the older models tend to be discounted when the new ones replace them. Can you ask just about Hawaii tablets, please? We got one from my father in law and we can't play Netflix. Never mind. Download Google Apps. It's pretty useless. Any advice from Viona?

[00:07:01]

Oh, that could be the example of what exactly we were just talking about there. It depends on what tablet it is and it depends on what year it is. And if it has access, it doesn't sound like it has access to Google Play services. So if you bought it for something and it's not for that purpose, maybe go back to the store and ask them if you can swap it for a different model. And there's a Lenovo M10 tablet, and I bought one as a gift online before Christmas for a member of my family.

[00:07:27]

And it's fantastic. It's a basic Android tablet, but it's ideal for, you know, online shopping, for emails, for Netflix, all that kind of stuff. And I think I paid around one hundred twenty euro for it. So try and bring that. Wow. I went back if you can, and then look at the Lenovo.

[00:07:45]

What tablet would you recommend purely to play bridge online. Would that Lenovo do the job that would do the job.

[00:07:52]

I don't know the exact textbook for playing bridge online, but I do think the Lenovo M10 tab is fantastic and it would definitely do the job for you.

[00:08:01]

I'm upgrading to an iPhone twelve. Would you recommend the mini version or just the twelve? By all accounts, there's not much difference and I don't like huge phones. That's from Emma.

[00:08:10]

Yeah. The beauty of the smart thing that Apple did with the iPhone was that they made the basic iPhone twelve on the iPhone. Twelve many the exact same specs. You're absolutely right. There is no difference in terms of performance or the spec in any way, shape or form. The screen on the mini is quite small. I've had it in my hand and I have dinky little child like hands and it did still feel quite small. So it was me.

[00:08:32]

I would go for the basic iPhone twelve.

[00:08:35]

Is it cheaper than any thumb? The basic.

[00:08:37]

It is cheaper, yeah. Yeah it is cheaper because you're getting smaller screen size so it's much more affordable. But as I said, I feel the mini is just slightly too small for me.

[00:08:47]

Can you ask Jess if she can recommend a power line adapter for a Virgin Media hub to boost my signal in an adjacent room to the hub? That's from Michael.

[00:08:57]

Yeah, I've seen so many of these questions coming in over Christmas. A lot of people facing into working from home again are looking to improve their signal. T.P link is a brand that I really recommend because there's another alternative and it is the tender NOVA wi fi mesh system. So it's less than one hundred and you plug the two ns in in different parts of your house and that creates an entire mesh around your house. So you're not just going to be focusing on stretching the signal from one room to another.

[00:09:25]

It'll cover the entire area. So that would actually be my go to a the top link.

[00:09:30]

At the moment I've seen a much better performance from us looking for a small music device for running. I don't want to bring my phone. Look, I have Spotify. What do you think?

[00:09:42]

Yeah, this is a funny one because for you to have Spotify, obviously you'll need a wi fi enabled device so you can still get some MP three players. There's none that have really blown me away. I think creative who used to make the Zen players are still knocking around and you can get stuff like that. I don't know is the honest answer maybe looking somewhere like Argos, but it's the fact that you want to use Spotify that causes the issue.

[00:10:09]

The other thing you could do is go somewhere like Argo's and buy an album phone for like fifty euro. Don't put a SIM card into it, just have your apps on it for when you're running so you could use your runkeeper, have your Spotify, and that way you can get on to the wi fi. But when you're out it's completely off.

[00:10:24]

Yeah. So you got to download from your Spotify for running purposes and then listen back to the downloads and he mentions that mighty vibe, whatever that.

[00:10:34]

Might be scene that might divide, we might check that out on another occasion and ask just what's the best smart TV to get smart TV?

[00:10:44]

Buying a smart TV can be an absolute headache because there are so many different models out there and it's very hard to distinguish even when you're in a store. The difference is between them. I have used quite a few and I would say that LG, I think has the best interface. I really like the interface on the LG TVs and the different things to consider are obviously of the size. So how big do you want your screen to be? The thing to remember is I would always go slightly bigger than you think because the barrier, the border around the TVs is pretty much gone now.

[00:11:13]

So it is just screen to screen. So you're getting a huge amount of space and also things like HDR and for K, there are two things are almost the standard now on the bigger screen TVs for getting anything sort of around 40 inches or bigger. It'll have those things. But just make sure the big thing is make sure that you can use the interface to like the interface. The great thing is if you put in a particular model into YouTube, there are so many different channels.

[00:11:39]

You demo how it works and you can see, OK, that looks intuitive, that doesn't look intuitive.

[00:11:43]

So that would be my advice, she says my 10 year old is interested in video editing birthday incoming. What device or software would you recommend that might be suitable?

[00:11:54]

Oh, that is a good question. It depends again on what they want to be doing. But you can get things like Windows Moviemaker that you can put on pretty much any laptops. You could get a basic Lenovo idea pod and put that onto us. Alternatively, if you wanted, you could look at getting something like an iPad, one of the more basic iPods, because that comes with the software for moviemaker a standard. You don't have to pay extra for that software.

[00:12:18]

And obviously all the files would sync up very seamlessly to the cloud because would video files, they tend to be quite big. So getting something like an iPad, one of the more basic iPads, she would have the camera on it if you wanted to shoot on those plus moviemaker.

[00:12:32]

And then it's a really nice device to use as a time for one more centre left. My seven year old a Samsung Galaxy Tab Tentage, which of course, has a crack of the screen already. Any suggestions for a good and reasonably priced repair places to get it repaired?

[00:12:48]

Oh, gosh, that is the ultimate nightmare. I would get on to someone like Back from the future. They have shops right around Dublin. I'm sure there's other places obviously around the country as well. But get on to parks in the future, because if they if you're not in Dublin, they will definitely recommend somewhere else. And please, please, please buy a cover so it doesn't happen again.
