Steve Dangle, Adam Wylde and Jesse Blake discuss the crazy rumour swirling that Sidney Crosby could potentially be on the ...
There is one thing I'd like to acknowledge. What's that? Is that yesterday, somehow, someway, Cydney Crosby coming to Toronto made its way into the Toronto news cycle. Oh, no. It started with a hockey news article. I'm not going to spend a ton of time on this. Started with a hockey news article, which then made its way across the internet. Then this morning, I'm running the board for my mom's morning show because they're in Barbados right now. So was I. She's like, I don't have anybody to run the board. I was like, Okay, fine. And I see not only Handsome Chris Johnson on Insider Trading four different times on mute, but Brian Hayes was with Jay Onright, and he's talking about, Would Crosby be a good fit in Toronto? As if that's a question. And what does the package look like? And I just say, listen, I know Penn's fans have been hard on you, but I am really going to enjoy this one. I know he's going to Colorado if he goes anywhere. I know. But can I enjoy this?
No.
Why can't I enjoy this?
I won't even let my mind drift there.
He's not coming here. He's not. He's going to Colorado. If he's going anywhere, he's going to Colorado.
But he's probably not going anywhere.
He's probably not. Also, please give credit to the correct people. Overdrive is the one who started this. I thought it was Hockey News. The Hockey News, they reference OverDrive in their article. One of those. Yeah, no. Overdrive got this. Jeff and all of them got this started.
My wife calls him. She's like, You know the Jeff dog? I'm You mean the O-Dog?
The Jeff Dog.
Hayes and McClennan and the O-Dog, they all got this started.
Jeff Dog.
I want to say- And pasta, his co-host. I respect this so much. No noodles.
I'm trying to think.
I respect the hustle. I love it. I hope that this ping-pong ball that they've created never loses momentum, and that it just pings around the room like a stray doesn't hit anyone, doesn't stop, just keeps going until Crosby inevitably says, I'm staying here for the rest of my career. Can you all shut up?
Oh, God. He's not saying that. And if he meant it, he would have said it already.
Is anyone asking him, though? I don't think anyone's asking him.
No. Well, they haven't yet.
Oh, stop it.
They will. You think they won't?
People are saying. You got to ask the question. You're hearing it more and more. Some of those are my favorite get-out-of-it prepositions. People have been saying. You're hearing them more and more. Yeah, there are rumblings. Chatter's picking up. Chris Drury sent out a trade memo included on the trade memo.
A trade memo?
Yeah, it's a trade... Because those go out. That Truba and Kreider are up for grabs.
Who's calling it that?
It was literally in the athletic.
Who called it that?
Who called it? I'll look at who wrote the article. The article is Arthur Staple and Peter off.
And they call it a trade memo? Yeah.
So essentially what happens is they send out... Yeah. League sources confirmed a Monday report from Elliott Freeman that Chris Drury sent word... Sorry, it's not called a trade memo in this particular thing, but I have heard it referred to as that, sent word to all 31 other GMs that the Rangers are open to a trade. And those sources said, Captain Jacob Truba and longest tenured Ranger Chris Kreider were mentioned specifically by name in the League wide missive. Oh, shit. So it's a missive. Let's look up synonyms for missive. Missive. Synonyms. I didn't expect for this to be such a thing. I was just-Message, communication, letter, word, note, memorandum. Oh, no. Oh, shit. It was a trade memo. Oh, no. Anyway, long story short, I think it's interesting. Now, you may not realize this, but Chris Kreider is second on the team in goals. His 136 goals since the start of '21, '22 are tied for ninth in the league.
He's tied for last in assist.
He is bad. He has zero. Zero.
Steven Kreider got the same amount as zero. At the NHL level this season.
That's actually wild.
How long do you think that's going to last, Steve?
When's their next game? Yeah.
Until then.
I pointed it out. That means it's done.
Yeah. So here's what I want to know. I want to know who from this roster really and truly makes sense, because there are other names, apparently, out there. And one of them that I'm surprised, is Ryan Lingerin, who is 26, who is a UFA.
There's two names on that list that don't make sense.
Well, who's the other one?
Keandre Miller.
Well, I believe that was debunked. I don't think that that's actually true.
Okay, well, good, because that makes no sense.
He has looked a bit soft at times, but I don't think that the Rangers are giving up on Keandre Miller.
Well, now that we've eliminated that name, yeah, Lingerin doesn't make any sense either.
Now, they are We talked about this in our season previews. They are facing a cap crunch at the end of the year. Somebody's got to go. Lingren and Truba have been paired up, so it's not been Lingerin/Fox, and Lingerin has not looked like himself. It's hard to know whether that's Lingerin or Truba or Fox or a mixture of all three. But here are the names from CJ: Kreider, Truba, Kako, who's played well, and Lingerin.
Kako has played well. It's always very tough with a second overall pick. Like, oh, is he finally hitting his stride or do we sell high? That's a guy they've been in rumors with forever. So just rip the bandit off. Do it. Sorry. Who else?
Truba Kreider, Cacko Lingerin.
Lingerin to me doesn't make any sense. And if you want to win a Stanley Cup, I don't think Kreider makes any sense.
Well, that's what I thought because he's been pretty valuable the entire time and way outplayed his deal.
Yes.
And they almost tried. Remember they tried to trade him right before COVID, that season?
Good teams. I mean, he's been in trade rumors a lot over the course of his career. Yeah, but look how they've done Keeping him, though. All those appearances in the final four. I'm trying to remember if he was part of the Cup final team in 2014. He's played a lot of Stanley Cup play-up. He was.
He was? Played 13, 14?
Oh, because that was the year he hurt price.
Or was it 14, 15?
13, 14. Okay, yeah. That was the year he hurt Price.
In 123. He's played 123 play-off games.
That's a lot of play-off games.
He has 48 goals.
He's really good. He's a really good play-off performer. How did he do last year, though?
In the playoffs? Yeah. 8 goals, 4 assists in 16 games. That's really good.
I just feel like if you have Aspir... They're also good, by the way.
The Rangers? Yeah, they're not hurting. But they're playing Carolina tonight, so it's a bit of a test. Okay.
So try and beat them, I suppose. You know what I mean? I just feel like you trade Chris Kreider, you're going to spend the whole trade deadline trying to replace him.
He does. And it's interesting because the article from Staple and Bought says, well, you make six and a half. Okay, that's- That might be hard to move. And I'm like, oh, boy, I think there'd be a lot of teams who would love a $6.5 million forward, going off Coming off of a 39 goal season.
I think you're on drugs to trade this player. I don't understand.
They haven't been playing well. That's the thing. The record sits all right in comparison to teams who are looking at, Hey, we're in a playoff spot. We're above 500. We've been winning more games than we're losing. We're doing okay. But this team doesn't want to be there. They want to be in the conversation of the top teams in the league, we're going for the President's trophy, maybe We're winning the division. We're up there with the Devils. We're going to look like a Stanley Cup contender all season long. The effort that the veteran core is giving on the ice hasn't been good enough. That's why all of this is happening is they need some shake up to get these guys going. Despite putting up some decent point numbers, it's about the everyday game in, game out. They're disappointed with the results on the ice in terms of the From an effort standpoint and looking like a competent Stanley Cup contender.
This feels like the situation where you lean on your coach. It sounds like the coach is not squeezing enough out of the core. You know what I mean? Okay, they're winning games, but they're not playing well. We have all these players who we know are valuable when they're playing their best. Linngren is super valuable. Cacko is a nice complementary piece at this point in his career. Kreider is ridiculous. He's still got good goal scoring totals, and he's good. He's one of your most consistent playoff performers. And then who am I missing from that? Oh, Truba. Right. Truba. Are you going to dismantle other really good parts of your team because you're having difficulty trading this guy you gave trade protection to? We're going to make these other trades because we haven't been able to find a suitable partner for Truba. I don't mind them making a move, and I don't mind them settling for not good enough. They refuse to settle for what they've gotten. I just don't... Kreider, to me, doesn't make sense. Lingerin It doesn't make sense. Kako, go for it. Truba, obviously go for it.
Right. I think a move like Truba makes a lot of sense to shake things up. Yeah.
That trade protection screws everything up because I think Ottawa makes that trade immediately.
I really do. Yeah. Ryan Lingerin also hasn't been the best since coming back from the broken jaw. There's some holes there, and they're trying to fix them because they're not happy with being complacent with where they are.
But to me, it's like if the Lefs had traded Tavares after he was sick and was terrible.
Yeah. I'm not advocating for moving Lingerin. I'm advocating for the Rangers need a shake up because they're not playing hockey that's going to lead them for a deep playoff run.
They're playing stale. Now, they did mention in the piece that Kreider is second on the team with nine goals, but his line with Sabina Jad and Riley Smith has been under 50% in general.
Yeah, Riley Smith took I was so, so hyped on Riley Smith because when I was looking at that series against Carolina and the way they were, I guess, against Florida, they needed that winger. They needed a good top six winger. And Riley Smith is going to step in there and get that that Zbinajad Kreider line going. And I thought he was going to be the last piece. And he's been extremely disappointing. That whole line has been extremely disappointing.
And he was in Pittsburgh last year, too. Raleigh Smith. That's why they moved on from him so quickly. So I'm curious about that. I wonder, is it circumstance or are we seeing the decline of a player who was awesome? And he's 33. I hope that's not the case. I'm not suggesting it is, but we have to keep an eye on it after 40 points in 70 games where the previous year, he had 56. Now, So the next thing I want to mention. Sure.
I was...
Yeah. Okay. You guys are not?
No, I'm just... The Rangers are...
I'm staying on the Rangers, but...
They're such a complicated team full of guys who can do it. Zabana Jad is a guy who's been criticized a lot in recent memory for just not giving enough. And I was like, okay, I wonder where he sits since 2022, the last time they went to the final four. I wonder where he sits in team scoring in the playoffs. And the answer is first.
They were in the final four last year.
Yeah, you're right.. So two final fours in three years. Now, he was crazy in 2022, and he's dropped off since. Kreider is third. Oh, man, I don't know.
I don't know. I think if you want to ask the question about Pierre Lavalette, there's this question to be had about whether he's getting the most out of his players. I want to ask the question. I think that's a very fair question, Steve.
