[00:00:58]

And just so you know, I am recording this the day before the election in the United States, which means I don't know what the results are in our presidential election. I do know that by the time you are listening to this, you should probably know what the results were.

[00:01:13]

So I don't know the results.

[00:01:15]

I'm just going to tell you from where I'm sitting. We're going to chat about what is important for you, what is important for the United States. But this is also important for no matter where you are in the United States. So if you're outside of the United States and you're not into politics, the United States at all, this is still super important for you.

[00:01:33]

Because what I'm going to talk about is, you know, quite a few things that are going to be super important to you because some people woke up today and the results that happened for them last night or a couple of days ago, depending on when you're listening to this, are not the results that they wanted.

[00:01:49]

Right. Some people woke up and the results that happened were the results that happened. Some people woke up and the results that happened were not the results that happened.

[00:01:57]

But that's how life is, isn't it? Sometimes you have things that you want to happen. Sometimes you have things that you want to happen and they don't happen at all. And sometimes they happen and that's what it is. But whatever happened, happened, you can't control that. Now, the only thing that you can control is yourself.

[00:02:15]

And this is for the election. But this is for every single thing in your life, because we all have a past.

[00:02:21]

No matter who you are, you have some sort of past. And if you're like most people, there might be certain parts of your past that you are not accepting, that you're not just fully accepting and moving on and getting past.

[00:02:32]

Right. So this is for the election. This is for everything else as well.

[00:02:36]

But you may have heard me say this before, the amount of stress, worry, sadness, anxiety, all of those bad feelings that you feel in your body, the amount that you feel will be in direct proportion to how much that you are resisting the way that the world is.

[00:02:52]

Right. The results are in the past is the past. The only thing that we can control now are ourselves, our thoughts, our own feelings and our actions.

[00:03:01]

The only thing that you've actually been able to control your entire life are your thoughts, your feelings and your actions. There's literally been nothing else.

[00:03:10]

You can't even control your own kids. They have their own minds, right? They can do what they want. Now, maybe they follow your orders sometimes, but they are their own free sovereign being.

[00:03:19]

So literally, the only thing that we can control is our own thoughts, our own feelings and our own actions. And your thoughts will dictate your feelings and your feelings will dictate your actions. So the most important thing is to pay attention to the thoughts that we feel and to pay attention to every single aspect of that. So let's dive into it. Let's say that something happened to you in your past that you really didn't want to happen.

[00:03:45]

I know people that had something happen to them ten, fifteen, twenty years ago that wasn't what they wanted in their still holding onto it and resenting themselves because of the fact that they did something or they're resenting someone else or they won't forgive somebody else for what they did for them.

[00:04:02]

What good is holding on to that resentment? What is that doing? It's only holding you back, right?

[00:04:10]

Your thoughts are going to dictate how you feel. So if you're waking up and you're thinking about this didn't happen the way that I wanted to, whatever this thing is, it didn't happen the way that I wanted to, and I'm fucking pissed off.

[00:04:20]

OK, cool.

[00:04:22]

Can that feeling of being pissed off in this room, I want to throw something through the window.

[00:04:28]

Does that change anything in the past? No, it doesn't. And guess what?

[00:04:34]

No action that you ever take will change the past unless we somehow figure out a way to get some frickin time machines and travel through some wormholes. Nothing that you ever do your entire life will ever change the past.

[00:04:46]

The only thing that you can change is how you feel about what happened, what happened, happened. What can we do to change our thoughts about it?

[00:04:56]

Because I've I wake up and I'm like, these results are not the results that I wanted this past that person. This thing is not what I wanted to happen. I'm going to be pissed. And if I'm pissed or sad or anxious in those, if those are thoughts that are going through my head, how am I going to feel in my body?

[00:05:13]

I want to feel like shit, and if I feel like shit, am I going to want to get up and take action towards the desired results in the desired future that I want in my life?

[00:05:21]

No, absolutely not. Your thoughts control your feelings, your feelings control your actions.

[00:05:28]

So why don't you look at what it is that you're resisting?

[00:05:31]

Look at it is that you're not accepting and say, how can I become you don't have to be OK with any of it, but how can I become the best version of myself in spite of this thing?

[00:05:44]

It is what it is. How can I become the best version of myself in spite of that? One thing that I want to point out to you is that no president, no government, no person, no event that's ever happened to you in your entire life. Nothing can take your happiness away from you. Nothing, you are the only one that's in control of your happiness, that's it. No president has no government, no person, no event, nothing that's ever happened to you has ever controlled your happiness, what controls your happiness, how you view what happened to you or how you view your past.

[00:06:19]

That's the only thing that changes your happiness. So how you think, how you feel and how you act will always be the last of your freedoms.

[00:06:29]

How you think, how you feel and how you act will always be the last of your freedoms no matter else, whatever is taken away from you, whatever changes happen, whatever things happen in this world, how you think, how you feel and how you act are always 100 percent up to you. And they always have been.

[00:06:50]

It's about realizing that whatever happened to you in your past happened, it happened. Now we got to deal with it. We've got to move on and we got to continue down our path. You've got to know what your path is.

[00:07:04]

I'll give you an example for myself. Things are going to happen. I'm just I understand that shit's going to hit the fan in my life at points. And it has many times, but no shit hitting the fan. No government, no president, no politics, no person, no place, no events. Nothing will ever stop me from being the highest version of myself, from living up to my true potential. And guess what? The only thing that's holding you back from living up to your highest potential is you.

[00:07:31]

It's not the government. It's not the president. It's not politics. It's not a place. It's not an event. It's not any person. It's not anything that's ever happened to you in your past.

[00:07:38]

You are the only thing standing in the way of that. So does the country you live in and the government, the president matter? Yeah, those things matter. Of course. I'm going to say they don't matter, but they only matter to the extent that you allow them to matter. Think about that, are you allowing the things that are happening around you, whether it's the government, the politics, the president, the people that are around you, to overstep their boundaries in your own mind and make you feel a way that you don't want to feel?

[00:08:09]

It's up to you because what matters most is you, yes, you it has always been and will always be up to you. So no matter what happened to you in your past, it is your job to accept it and say, now what? All right, this happened.

[00:08:26]

Is it what I wanted? Maybe, maybe not. But if it didn't happen the way that I wanted, that's just the way that it went.

[00:08:33]

It's not going to hold me back from being the truest, best version of myself. I'm going to do it even though it didn't happen the way that I wanted to.

So you no matter what happened to you in your past, it's your job to accept it and say, now what? Don't ever let someone outside of you define you and who you're going to be. Who you're going to become, who you're going to impact, what life you're going to live. Don't ever let someone that's outside of you do that. Don't give up that freedom. That's the only real freedom that you have, is who you are, how you think, how you're going to act, how you're going to feel.

[00:10:17]

That is your freedom. Don't give that one up. You are the captain of your own ship. You are the master of your reality. If it didn't go the way that you wanted it to be.

[00:10:26]

OK, well, that didn't work the way that I wanted to. But I'm going to go ahead and I'm going to do it anyways.

[00:10:31]

There's so many people that have survived and thrived in spite of their past.

[00:10:37]

Most people have gone through something bad.

[00:10:41]

Most people who are happy and successful and joyful and want to have the things that you want or the life that you want have gone through some shit everybody has that's part of life.

[00:10:52]

But don't let anything that's happened to you define you. Don't let anything has happened in your past to find you. You are the one you are the one that matters the most. And you know what? The world needs you to be the best version of yourself. That's what the world really needs. So if it didn't happen the way that you wanted it to happen, that means that the world needs you more than it did before.

[00:11:14]

That means the world needs you to step up and be the best version of yourself. The world needs everybody to step up and be the best version of ourselves. What could the world be if seven point five billion people were the absolute best version of themselves? Could you imagine that if you complete utopia, it'd be amazing. Everything would be great if you like heaven on earth, it is so much love and compassion and everybody would be taken care of. But not everybody is living up to who they truly can be.

[00:11:40]

They're blaming things outside of them. They're blaming the government. They're blaming the president. They're blaming their past and their parents and their spouses and their ex's and all of those things. They're blaming everybody outside of them and not looking inside and saying it happened. This is the way that it is and I'm going to accept and do it anyways. The world needs you to be the best version of yourself. The other thing that the world needs from you, the world needs you to be more compassionate.

[00:12:05]

Why? Because there's not enough compassionate people in this world. Right. What the world needs now is love, sweet love. It's like the song says, that's the only thing that there's just too little love. We need you to be compassionate. We need you to be the lighthouse. We need you to be the person who shows the world what they need to be, who inspires people. You ever meet someone that's really kind, really humble, really amazing.

[00:12:28]

And you're like, man, that person wasn't commanding. That person wasn't rude. But I look up to that person. It was just something about the way that they held themself. Right. What if there was more people in the world like that? What if you were one of those people that inspired people through your actions, not by being hard core or by yelling at people or by being this this leader that screams at people and tells them what to do?

[00:12:50]

No. What if you were the humble warrior, the one that really everyone met and like, man, that person, he or she just really inspired me by the way they acted. I want to be more like them. Right. Think about that. If someone doesn't act the same way that you do, that's OK. If someone doesn't think the same way that you do, that's OK. Someone else's actions shouldn't change the way that you treat them.

[00:13:16]

Oh, hold on.

[00:13:17]

I might have just offended some people there. I said it right.

[00:13:20]

Someone's else's actions won't change, should not change how you treat them right.

[00:13:26]

For me, I'll just be honest with you. I made a decision five years ago that I'm going to treat people as the best version of ourselves, not who they are.

[00:13:34]

You heard me right. Doesn't matter what they did, does it matter who they are? Doesn't matter what they've done in the past. I'm going to treat them with love and respect and compassion as much as I possibly can. Do I feel at that sometimes. Absolutely. But I'm trying to get better at it. And that's what I'm trying to work out. I treat people and I want to treat people how I think they could be, not who they currently are.

[00:13:54]

Right. People say, oh, you need to earn my trust. There's nothing that somebody needs to do to earn my trust. They already have my trust in what I what I when I come up to somebody and I give them that form of connection and they feel trusted, what happens, they usually show up as the better version of themselves. I made that decision. So when you show up, what do you how do you show up? When you show up with someone and you show up with someone and you treat them at the highest version myself, they show up better and it inspires them to be better.

[00:14:24]

So what I'm going to challenge you to do today is to just accept how the world is right now. Today might be a heavy day. It might be a lot going on. Whatever's going on, I don't know, because I'm I'm shooting you know, I'm recording this in the past.

[00:14:40]

So I don't know what today looks like. I don't know the past couple days have looked like for you.

[00:14:44]

But what I do know is what really matters the most is I'm going to challenge you to just accept the way that the world is. How the results are going to challenge you to accept your past. I'm going to challenge you to accept the election, what the world needs now is for you to be your best. For you to accept and still go on and create the best version of you, for you to go on and say, I'm going to do this no matter what happened, OK, the results are not the results that I wanted to.

[00:15:16]

It's not going to stop me from creating the best freaking life that I can. In fact, nothing that has ever happened or will ever happen will ever hold me back from me the best I possibly can be. That's the way your mindset needs to be. The world needs you to be your best. The world needs you to accept your past and to move on and create the best version of you. The world needs you to be more compassionate. The world needs you to be a lighthouse to show people how they should treat other people right.

[00:15:44]

The world needs you to be the light in darkness. The world needs you to be the change. The Gandhi quote, be the change that you want to see in the world means don't expect a government or a person outside of you or a president to change the world because they won't be able to.

[00:15:57]

How does the world change when everybody looks at themselves in the mirror and says, I want to be the change?

[00:16:05]

Can we be the type of people, everyone who's listening to this episode be the type of people who inspire others to be better because we're holding ourself to the high standards, because we're trying to be the best we possibly can, because we're trying to have the best possible lives that we can. We're trying to treat people the best we possibly can. We're trying to give people the most love and compassion that we possibly can and inspire others around us to do the same.

[00:16:25]

Will it inspire everybody, do the same? No. But will it spark a couple of flames? Yes.

[00:16:30]

And that's what the world really needs. The world needs you to step up. The world needs you to become the change that you want to see. Not expect that someone else is going to do it for us. That's what we need. We need a bunch of adults who accept the past, who see their faults, who see everything that's happened to them, who are past it, who have given their forgiveness, who have given the love, the compassion they need to everything that's happened to them in their past.

[00:16:53]

But it's not going to hold them back from being who they truly want to be. The question is, are you ready to step up to the plate and be that type of person? Because I'm going to tell you this. I don't know what happened in all of the results, but I do know no matter what happens or what has happened, depending on when you listen to this, I do know that the world needs more of you and the world needs the best version of you.

[00:17:16]

So are you going to step up to the plate and be one of the people that changes the world? So that's what I got for you for today's episode.

[00:17:23]

The entertainment business is crazy, and some of the stories behind how film and TV projects get made is oftentimes better than the final product itself. I'm your host, Matthew Holderman, and in Buffalo, he's greenlit podcast. We're going to take a deep dive into some of the stories behind some of the biggest movies and TV shows and specifically how they got made each week.

[00:18:27]

We'll talk with some of the most successful industry producers, insiders and actors about their experiences on set and how they got to where they are today from the officer's creed. Bratton, that was a six and APHC Steve Carell to James Franco's producing and business partner Vince Jolivet.

[00:18:43]

James was literally one of the first people I actually met to Spike Lee's longtime editor, Barry Alexander Browne. That's the first sequence that cut the spine from Martin Scorsese, the Irishman, to Wes Anderson's Royal Tenenbaums to Rocky Mountain Black, The Hunger Games, Antman. Hook and other blockbusters join us each week as we discuss how your favorite films made it all the way from an idea through development into production and got released on your screen.
