Turn a Podcast into a Blogpost with Minimal Effort

Turn a Podcast into a Blogpost with Minimal Effort

Creating a podcast is time consuming. You have to research topic ideas, find relevant keywords, conduct interviews, record, edit, post, and market.

The end result, though, is something interesting and that has valuable content, especially if it includes interviews with guests who are true experts in their field. However, leaving the final creation as just a video or audio file doesn’t maximise your return on investment. You need to get more out of each podcast you do. You need to spread that content as far and wide as you can. You need to attract as wide an audience as possible.

But, how?

It’s true that podcasting is en vogue right now and that 50% of all homes label themselves as podcast fans. Yet, that still leaves 50% of the population presumably engaging in online content another way: reading.

Not attracting this audience segment, means you aren’t fully leveraging your ROI.

Whilst you may think that podcasts are the best way to get new knowledge, there are others that won’t agree. That’s simply because we all have different learning styles. Some people just prefer to digest content by reading it.

So if you are a podcaster and you want to reach as wide of audience as possible, you are going to need to publish some text content as well. This gives people who prefer to read over listening a chance to engage with your podcast via an alternative form of content. One great way to do this is with a blog post.

Blogposts have another benefit as well. It can also help your SEO. Search engines can’t scroll video or audio, so creating a blog post from your podcast content will help your rankings.

Luckily, you can turn a podcast into a blog post with minimal effort. All you have to do is repurpose your podcast content: here’s how.

Convert your Video to Text with Transcription

The average 30-minute podcast contains roughly 6,000 words. Manually converting that audio to text by listening, pausing, typing and rewinding, would take the unexperienced person roughly 4 hours.

Luckily, today’s technology makes it easy to convert video to text. AI (Automated Intelligence) also makes this quick and affordable.

Just upload your file to a video to text transcription service provider, like Happy Scribe. Whilst you are making another cup of coffee, they will take a few minutes to read your video file and will create a text version of everything that was spoken.

Highlight The Relevant Content and Export To Word

Within the Happy Scribe interface, you can then view the full text transcript.

Use Command F to pull up a search box and you can type in a specific topic idea that you want to pull out into a blog post. For example, in this extensive interview at a brewery in Colombia, I decide to make a blog post on the brewing process. I can search for ‘brewing’ and it takes me to the exact point in the text.

Next, highlight the text that you want to include in your blog post. You will want your final blog post to be between 750 and 2,000 words, so be sure to highlight a significant portion or be prepared to expand on that content.

Click on the Export button.

A list of options will pop up. Choose Word Document (.docx). Then click 'Export transcript'.

Make Final Edits and Post

To get started on the blog post, all you have to do now is open your Word document and make some minor edits.

A lot of highly successful podcasts just turn the full transcript of the entire show into a blog post. Which is one option, but with a little bit of editing and addition of information you can actually write multiple blogposts inspired by a single podcast episode.

By pulling out a highlighted portion of your podcast episode, as I did above, you can make a single source blog post. Maybe you expand on what your interviewee said with our own comments. Perhaps you include some links to additional sources. Additionally you can add a compelling introduction and conclusion. With a few simple tweaks you now have something new to share with your audience. For example, here’s the post I created from the interview at the brewery, where I focused on the brewing process.

Another option is to create a multiple source blog post. After you have conducted numerous podcasts, it is likely that you will be able to find some common themes among your interviews and tie them into a detailed blog post. By combining the insights from several experts along with your own analysis, you’ve created some exciting new content for your audience.

By simply transcribing your video to text you can reuse your podcast content in a new medium - a blog post - with minimal effort. The result is that you are able to reach new and different audiences and increase your SEO rankings. Definitely something you should consider as part of your online content strategy.
