Mckeela J. Rodriguez is a multi-hyphenate talent, award-winning, groundbreaking. She's an actress, a Broadway performer, and she's a singer as well. Now, she's out with Loot on Apple TV and American Horror Story on FX. So, McKeela J, welcome.

[00:00:15]

Thank you. I'm glad to be back and see you again.

[00:00:17]

I'm very happy to see you. You're a very busy woman.

[00:00:20]

Yes, I am.

[00:00:22]

And on this show, you play Sophia, who is a no-nonsense nonprofit CEO. But you also have a love interest in the second season.

[00:00:32]

I do have a love interest this second season. We get to see Sophia squirm a little bit. First season, like you said, we got to see her straight laced and no BS, right? A little up tight. I love that we could see her loosen up a bit in second season. I love it.

[00:00:43]

We have a clip from it, so let's take a look.

[00:00:45]

What is this? For full disclosure, it's not quite finished. It's not done at all. You didn't even finish the word presentation. Well, I was about to type the in, and then the meeting was starting, and you told us to never be late. So in many ways, this is your fault. Howard, you need to I'm not going to put this seriously. Space for Everyone is a huge project. We all need to be at the top of our games. This needs to get done. Yes, ma'am. That's hilarious.

[00:01:24]

I'm a little bit afraid of you in the beginning of the clip, but are you a closet swifty at the end?

[00:01:29]

Yeah, she's a vibe, and she's a great songwriter.

[00:01:31]

She really is. You've been putting songs out there as well. How would you describe your music? Tell us about your most recent releases.

[00:01:42]

My music is definitely R&B and pop, and I have two singles that will be coming out pretty soon. My recent singles, they were very rooted in R&B and funk, but now we're taking a different role, and we're going to rebrand in a different way.

[00:01:54]

You also have that Broadway training. The last time I saw you was on stage at the Rose Bowl, belting out a song with Billy Porter.

[00:02:01]

Please welcome Ms. Blanca Evangelista, Mikaela J. Rodriguez.

[00:02:07]

Give it up. That was at the height of Pose. What do you decide to put your energy into music or into theater or into TV.

[00:02:18]

I went to school for music initially at Berkeley College of Music. So I put all of my love into music, but that doesn't deter me from acting or theater. I like to think I'm a Jack of all trades.

[00:02:28]

Yeah, we have to talk about your history-making moment. I was at home ready to scream and so excited. You made history as the first trans lead actress to win a Golden Glove. What was that moment like?

[00:02:40]

I mean, it was insane for me. Like you said, it was the first time a trans woman of Color had ever gotten that opportunity, and I was just astounded by it. I also had insecurities that I would never be able to actually achieve something like that. It was a big surprise to me.

[00:02:54]

The show itself was so groundbreaking and made such a difference with representation. How has that changed you, do you think?

[00:03:01]

It's changed me a lot. I always hold Blanca on my shoulders. She was a wonderful pillar for me. I learned a lot from her, and I take her everywhere I go.

[00:03:07]

And the house of Evangelista. Let's take a look at a moment from our past interview when we talk about it. In the face of all the hate that is directed at the trans community, your answer is love.

[00:03:17]

Amen to that, yes. Love is the answer. That's where a lot of my confidence comes from. Whether there be derogatory slurs, whether there be hate, I still choose to persevere through that.

[00:03:29]

You talked in that clip about about all the hate that's out there. It's in many ways only amplified in the last couple of years. How do you deal with it? And when do you know when to carry that weight and when to let it go?

[00:03:42]

It fuels me, actually. I like to be fueled by the people who can't really deal with me. It actually lets a fire under me to keep going.

[00:03:48]

You can tell you're having a lot of fun on loot. But at the same time, you're also in another Ryan Murphy project, right? American Horror Story, with somebody named Kim Kardashian.

[00:04:00]

My girl.

[00:04:00]

What has that project been like for you?

[00:04:02]

It's been great. It's definitely different. I know this is going to sound corny, but I don't know. It feels like a sisterhood. Like I said, I love to show versatility, and this is a total different character from Sofia and Blanca, and I'm glad that people get to see all different types of facets of me.

[00:04:17]

And what's crazy is it's Maya Rudolf in Loot. Obviously, comic chops like crazy.

[00:04:24]

What flavor is this? Gin.

[00:04:27]

And others who are round up the cast are all comedians. What's it like? Are you pretty much the straight man or do you like the comedy of it?

[00:04:34]

I'm pretty much the straight man of the show. And I would say that I always call them the comedian guru. So I learn from them all the time. They have been the teachers to me, and I feel like I get a master class from them all the time.

[00:04:45]

You are such a role model in the trans community. What message do you have to young people out there or any trans folks out there who might be struggling?

[00:04:53]

I would say to any trans person, any trans woman, any person who is different, no matter if they're part of the LGBTQ your AI community or not, just keep doing you. Don't let anyone deter you. I mean, I'm living testament. I always say this, and I like to be the example, so live up to the example.

[00:05:10]

So what can we look forward to in the future for Mikaela Jay? What do you have your sights set on?

[00:05:15]

Listen, music, music, music, and making sure that I become the pop star that I deserve to be.

[00:05:19]

All right, there. You've actualized it into reality. I am so glad to see you again. Same here. You keep being you, Mikaela Jay.

[00:05:28]

Thank you. Nice to see you. It's good to see you, too.

[00:05:30]

You can catch Mikaela Jay Rodriguez in Loot on Apple TV Plus and American Horror Story on FX.
