She started making music in her bedroom as a teenager. Now, with nearly 700 million global streams, the pop sensation, Griff, is entering a new chapter, releasing her new ERP, Vertigo, Volume One, at the end of 2023. Let's take a listen. That was Astronaut, off of our new ERP. Griff, thank you so much for joining us.

[00:00:29]

Thanks for having me. I'm excited to be here.

[00:00:32]

So I want to start actually right off with Astronaut. Talk to us about what that process was like. We know that Chris Martin actually lent his piano playing skills from Coldplay. What went into creating that?

[00:00:44]

Yeah, It was crazy. I went on tour. I was lucky enough to go on tour with Coldplay for a month or so. I played Chris's music, and he heard Vertigo, and he ran to the piano and started playing it. At that time, this song was a lot bigger production and a lot more busy. He just advised me that the song should be stripped back. I mustered up the courage to ask if he would help me do that. So yeah, he played the piano and it was very surreal.

[00:01:09]

Any lessons learned from Chris Martin?

[00:01:13]

I guess It was more just quite inspiring to see how much he's still so in love with music. Being in the studio with him, he still lights up and is so electric. Yeah, it was a really crazy experience.

[00:01:26]

What attracted you to music as we talked about that just when you were a teenager, you were singing in your bedroom. What was that calling? What did that feel like early on? That you knew you had it because a lot of people love to sing, right?

[00:01:40]

I guess so. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know that I ever thought. Sometimes it was Chinese mom, Jamaican dad, you don't always think that the creative career path is what's going to happen for you. So it was mainly just a hobby for me. But I really loved writing songs. I would always come home from school, go to the piano, write songs. And I was born and raised in church, so I guess music was always around me. So yeah, that's how it happened.

[00:02:02]

Now, you actually opened up for a number of different headliners for many concerts. Now you're about to have your own. You are the headline. You are the name on the marquee starting in March, touring in Europe. How does that feel to have that switch where you start opening up for other people and now you're the main event?

[00:02:19]

Definitely very different. It's different to perform in front of a stadium of people who aren't particularly there to see you. I'm really excited to just hear an audience sing back my songs and sing back the lyrics. I think it's going to be Yeah, a whirlwind.

[00:02:31]

You're releasing a single at the end of this month, Miss Me Too.

[00:02:35]

Exactly. It's coming.

[00:02:36]

What is special about this song?

[00:02:39]

This song, I think, is the most anthemic and euphoric song I think I've ever released. I'm super excited about it. It's about just wanting a version of yourself back that wasn't so heartbroken.

[00:02:52]

Of course, everybody's talking about the Super Bowl and the Taylor Swift effect, right? Yeah, I know. Taylor Swift has actually praised your music. What What is that like to someone who's so revered in the industry to give you your due?

[00:03:07]

Yeah, it's very surreal to me. I mean, I grew up like... I was a big, big swifty from the age of eight years old. She's probably my number one favorite. To have her go on her social media and post about my song is really kind and something she really doesn't have to do, and I'm so grateful to her.

[00:03:24]

What's next for you?

[00:03:25]

What's next? We're going to release a lot of new music, and we're going to tour. I'm really excited to tour and do my own shows. A bigger body of work will come out this side of the year as well.

[00:03:35]

So I'm excited. All the best to you in your tour in March in Europe. Thank you so much for joining us. I want to let our viewers know that Vertigo Volume 1 is now available wherever you stream your music.
