Capton Marvel is back, and this time she brought friends along for the ride. In the new highly anticipated sequel, The Marvel's and unlikely trio must team up and learn to work together to save the universe from Darbin, a revolutionary on the hunt for revenge. Take a look.

[00:00:15]

The annihilator. You took everything from me. And now I'm returning the favor.

[00:00:27]

Joining us now, is Zawie Ashton, who plays Darbin. Zawie, thank you so much for joining us. You've described this as an all-female sci-fi extravaganza.

[00:00:39]

Stravaganza. You've got it right, Lindsay.

[00:00:42]

What would you tell people that they can expect?

[00:00:45]

I would say you can expect a really different flavor of Marvel movie. This is an all-female empowerment story, and I think it's really rare to see all female heroes and a female antagonists at the same time. There's all these different fantastic dynamics that are at play, which I just don't think people have seen before. There's an amazing family story. There's a wonderful friendship story, and I just feel like it's a vintage flavor of Marvel, really, which is really exciting to be a part of.

[00:01:18]

You talk about the all-female cast. Also a female director, black woman who's directing Nia Acoste.

[00:01:23]

We've made.

[00:01:24]

Herster, yeah. Talk to us about how you work with her in the past and leading you to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

[00:01:31]

I'm so glad you brought that up, Lindsay, because for me, Nia was the beacon and the reason for me doing the film in every single way. She is the youngest woman. She is the first black woman to be part of that story. As soon as she said that she wanted me to be in the movie became more attractive than the role. I'm going to be honest, being part of, as we call it sometimes jokingly, but also tenderly, was really important.

[00:01:59]

We have seen whether you're on stage or whether you're on the big screen, it seems like you're attracted to, or maybe the roles just come to you, these dark, maybe even villainous characters. Are you going after those roles or those roles pursue you?

[00:02:16]

I mean, it's a good question. I feel like maybe there's a bit of both going on. I am someone who loves the chameleon-like nature of our industry and of acting. I love to completely reinvent myself with each character. And I think there is also something in me that is drawn to the outside. And yeah, I suppose maybe that's what I manifest. Maybe that's what I put out there. But I really am quite a cheerful person. How do you get into.

[00:02:47]

The headspace if you are a cheerful person? How do you then change, and as you said, that chameleon-like character?

[00:02:56]

Well, I feel, especially with Darben, she is this very heartbroken woman. She feels completely betrayed by Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel is someone that she saw promise her people freedom and actually ended up destroying her society. So she's had these years of watching her people suffering, and she wants revenge. She goes about things in the wrong way. But there's something I think everyone can relate to in terms of that type of betrayal, that type of rage that can bubble up.

[00:03:26]

I think a lot of people are going to find some parallels in real world, things that are happening right now. You, of course, have no shortage of talents from playwright, author, actress. What can we expect next from you?

[00:03:39]

To be fair, I feel like this has been such a wonderful juggernaut, and this film took me from pre-motherhood to post-motherhood. I transitioned into motherhood during this film. And so there's quite a bit that's gone on. So it feels wonderful to be back from the act of strike to be able to talk about it, celebrate it, put it out into the world with the rest of the women in the cast and with Nia, and actually just let the dust settle a little bit.

[00:04:09]

I can imagine.

[00:04:10]

I can.

[00:04:10]

Decide what to do with my life. I understand. Zawie, Ashton, such a pleasure to have you here in studio. Thank you for coming by. And want our viewers to know that you can see the marvels in theaters now.
