Akira Toriyama, the legendary creator of the Dragon Ball series, has died at the age of 68. Toriyama broke into the comic book world in the early '80s with Dr. Slump, the story about a little robot girl and her adventures around the world. But in 1984, he created the series that brought him international acclaim. Dragon Ball tells the story of Goku, the boy with spiky black hair, on his search for the mythical Dragon Balls and his quest to defend Earth. It made him one of Japan's highest selling manga authors, but it was arguably the release of the TV series of Dragon Ball Z that brought him worldwide fame. It's still to this day regarded as one of the greatest anime series of all time. As well as Dragon Ball, Toriyama also defined the looks of video game series like Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest, and even left this message in one of the endings of Chrono Trigger for his children. He was known to be fiercely private and didn't like showing his face. He even went as far as creating Robot Toriyama as an avatar in his titles. In a statement, Toriyama's studio said they hoped that his unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come, and fans around the world had paid tribute to a legend who inspired millions.
