This is Scott Becker with the Becker's Health Care podcast. And here's 14 stories that we're following this week in health care. And there's actually some good and positive news in some of this. So it's so nice to see some of that. First story, Baylor Scott-M-White sees a huge rebound in operating margins. Madelyne Ashley at Becker Sells, your covered debt. And that's going to be a theme as we see some of these systems start to recover and show better operating income. Second, a story on nursing work Look first. Shortages showing some signs of bouncing back. And Mariah Tyler covered that. Again, that's a story we're seeing a lot of people cutting down on contract nursing staff and things starting to bounce back in the staffing world. Third, a story by Jannis Bruce about Christie and a care, a great system in Delaware. We get emissions dropping as they work harder at using virtual nursing and seeing some success with that. Fourth, a story on CEOs. There's really two related stories here. There's 22 recent CEO exits that Lexie Kaiser is following. And then fifth is a story, the second CEO story of the day, how new CEOs play tough hands.

[00:01:08]

When a new CEO comes into a tough situation or follows a great leader, how do they deal with that? And that is covered by Kelly Gooch. So so far, a few stories on nurse stories is getting a little bit better. We've covered one story of another one on hospital margins getting better, and then a lot on CEO issues. The sixth story we're watching, Michael Regier, outstanding leader, General Counsel at Vandeblut University Medical Center, says he plans to retire, just a really good, good leader. Seventh, another story on economics for health system is moving in the right direction. And this is Mass General Brigham posting still a $32 million quarterly loss, but that's a huge improvement in a step in the right direction. So, Mass General Brigham, with the rest of the system, starting to move in the right direction. This is different for some rural systems, some rural areas, but overall, fantastic. A, sorry about Mayo Clinic, their care network expanding to two hospitals in Malaysia. Again, amazing the breadth and reach of Mayo Clinic today. And the Mayo Clinic, Naomi Diaz was covering that, another U of I graduate, so God bless Naomi. Nine, Care Coordination Solutions Company, led by Ashish Shah, a brilliant business leader, Dina, raises $7 million in another round of financing Anafalvi, covering that.

Tenth, Naomi Diaz, again, speaks about advent health. And advent health is one of the great systems that people don't know enough about. It's based in Florida, but 50 plus hospitals, large system led by a brilliant leader, Thierry Shaw. They're saying that they're going to invest heavily in IT, and everybody says so, but some people don't have the PnL to back it up. They're doing so, and really interesting to watch. 11th, one of the bad news stories of the day, California Hospital plans on more layoffs to get themselves financially to be able to sustain themselves. And we still see some of that. And obviously, a lot of health services got their P&Ls back in line by being much more careful on staff and a tradition of middle management. And so forth. That's when they're supposed to do that. 12th, another good story, positive story. And Sanford Health doubles or 2020, the operating income to 400 million plus. That's literally double from a year ago. Andrew Kias reports on that. 13th, Steward Florida, Steward Hospital, one of the private equity-funded hospital companies that's It's been a debacle. A story about them closing one of their abstractions units close sooner than expected.

[00:03:36]

Matt Lassley talks about that. Finally, Fourteen, Elon Condon writes about Common spirit health. Their CFO, Dan Morisette, one of the great ones in the business, used to be the Stanford CFO. It talks about their financial strategy starting to pay dividends. They're another system that had a huge turnaround this past year. Common spirit did, just like Kaiser Permanenti did and some other systems did. So he has off to Common spirit health, who does this incredible job of mixing health equity and clinical excellence. Just amazing. Finally, a PS, congratulations to Dr. Julie Wei of Akron Children's Hospital on her new book, Safeguarding Physician Wellbeing. Dr. Wei is a wonderful, wonderful person. So congratulations on that effort. In any event, those are fortunately the stories we're covering today. Again, some good news on the financial front, some good news on the staffing front. It seems like it's been a while since we've seen some of those good things, good news. So that's just terrific to watch. Thank you so much. Give me a call when you can at any time.
