Custody in your State Department.

[00:00:01]

For the first time, family and loved ones got to have their voices heard directly addressing the man who killed Kaylen Gillis. Judge Adam McAlaney, who presided over this trial also spoke directly to the convicted murderer today, saying when considering the sentence to impose, he waved in if he thinks Kevin Monahan could hurt someone again in the future.

[00:00:26]

With you, I think you really could possibly do the same again. It's obvious to me that you feel justified. You don't take any responsibility for the outcome of your actions.

[00:00:38]

Judge Michalini also recalled what Monahan said when he took the stand during the trial, testifying in his own defense.

[00:00:45]

You sensuously took the life of Calin Gillis, and you have the gall to sit here and talk about how you plan to finish up the work on your house and race motocross in the future. You don't deserve that.

[00:00:58]

True mercy is free Both sides today got a final chance to make their case for what they feel is a just sentence.

[00:01:07]

Assistant district attorney, Christian Morris.

[00:01:09]

Kevin Monahan was merciless in his judgment to act that night. The question here then would be, should he be shown mercy? Based on that, the answer is no.

[00:01:21]

Defense attorney, Arthur Frost.

[00:01:23]

I don't come here to ask you for mercy. I ask you to rebuff vengeance. I ask you to do what is just.

[00:01:32]

When given the opportunity, Kevin Monahan chose not to speak today, only saying this.

[00:01:38]

No, thank you, Your Honor.

[00:01:39]

Ultimately, Judge Michelini imposed the maximum sentence.

[00:01:44]

You murdered Calin Gillis. You shot at a car full of people, and you didn't care what would happen, and you repeatedly lied about it. You deserve to spend the maximum time in prison allowable under our law. I sentence you to a term of 25 years to life in prison.
