How to add subtitles in Camtasia

Import SRT captions into Camtasia

Step by step

  1. Export the finished video from Camtasia (Export > Local File) so the subtitles match your final timeline.
  2. Upload it to the HappyScribe subtitle generator, start with the free trial and select the spoken language. AI generates the subtitles in a few minutes.
  3. Review the text and timing in the online subtitle editor. Keep captions short: Camtasia greys out any caption text beyond three lines.
  4. Export the subtitles as SRT or VTT.
  5. In Camtasia, select File > Import > Captions and choose the file. The captions open in the caption editor, where you can adjust timing and font properties.
  6. Export the video with closed captions or with captions burned in (see below).

Caption formats Camtasia accepts

Camtasia imports and exports caption files as SAMI, SRT and VTT. HappyScribe exports both SRT and VTT, so either file works. SRT is the safest choice if you also upload the same captions to YouTube, Vimeo or an LMS.

Closed captions or burned-in captions?

Closed captions can be turned on and off by the viewer with the CC button. They are the right choice for accessibility, for training platforms and for publishing to YouTube or Screencast from Camtasia (Export > YouTube or Export > Screencast). On Windows, MP4 with Smart Player also keeps them as closed captions.

Burned-in (open) captions are always visible, which suits social media and players without caption support. On Windows, choose Export > Local File, select MP4, open Advanced Settings and, in the Captions tab, enable "Render video with open (always visible) captions". On Mac, choose Export > Local File and select "Burned in captions" in the Caption Style dropdown. You can also skip Camtasia and burn them in with the HappyScribe add subtitles to video tool.

Can Camtasia generate captions automatically?

How do I import an SRT file into Camtasia?

Select File > Import > Captions and pick your SRT, VTT or SAMI file. The captions appear in the caption editor, as TechSmith explains in its closed captions tutorial.

Why are my imported captions out of sync?

Usually because the subtitles were made from a different version of the video. Generate them from the final Camtasia export, or re-export the subtitles from HappyScribe after your last cut.
